Australian rugby boss Gary Flowers says he has heard amazing stories about how much weight New Zealand reconditioned All Blacks have stacked on, but believes the key to getting the World Cup betting odds favourites on the back foot is to make them think.
Flowers gave a run-down of Australia's World Cup preparations at a business lunch in Sydney on Thursday.
He was bullish about Australia's prospects despite the recent indifferent form of both the Wallabies and most of the local Super 14 teams.
He said the jury was still out on whether New Zealand's decision to keep 22 of their key players out of the first half of the Super 14 tournament was the correct one.
Flowers said New Zealand had set the performance benchmark leading into this year's World Cup, but declared there were any number of teams that could win the competition.
"France at home certainly are a team to be reckoned with. There's this wonderful psychology about the French that they don't actually care about what happens when they play away from home," Flowers said.
"But when they are at home it's something to die for and I think that is something that every team is aware of.
"I think the Irish world cup squad at the moment are a very strong outfit. If they can maintain their side without injuries to key players, they certainly will be a team to be reckoned with, although they are in a hard pool.
"They are in the same pool as France and Argentina. Argentina have done very well in recent years in internationals and almost all their team plays in France, so this for them is almost playing on home soil.
"The other team which I wouldn't discount is South Africa."
